First Impressions & The Whole "Getting There" Debacle
Right, so Ampang. Let's be honest, getting anywhere in Ampang requires a degree in urban navigation. Once I finally dodged the scooters and navigated the chaos, the sleek, modern facade of Liberty Arc did, admittedly, impress. It looked the part. Modern, glossy, and promising a life of effortlessly sophisticated living. (Emphasis on the "promising" part. I'm inherently suspicious of promises, especially ones made by buildings.)
Accessibility? Let's Get Real.
I'm not a wheelchair user, but I always look out for accessibility. Facilities for disabled guests are mentioned, but specific details are vague. There's an elevator (thank goodness!), that’s a good start, but without knowing the specifics of the rooms, hallways, and common areas, it’s hard to give it a glowing report card. More info needed, Liberty Arc!
WiFi: The Holy Grail (Seriously, Praise Be!)
Okay, let's cut to the chase: Free Wi-Fi in all rooms! And not just that, it was actually good WiFi! Like, I could stream Netflix without wanting to punt my laptop across the bloody room. This is a huge win in my book. I am, after all, living in an internet age, and I NEED my fix. And Wi-Fi [free] throughout the experience. Praise be!
(Minor rant incoming: Why is decent WiFi still considered a luxury in some places?! Argh!)
And the Internet Services & Wi-Fi in public areas:
This is a good one. The fact that there's reliable internet on-site to start with is a good sign. They also have Internet access – LAN, as well, and some services available.
Room Details: The Good, the Okay, and the "Hmm…"
The room itself? Pretty standard SOHO fare. Air conditioning (essential in KL), Blackout curtains (thank you, sleep gods!), and a Smart TV (yes!). Also… Daily housekeeping, which, in my experience, can often be a bit hit-or-miss. However, I'm pleased to report that the team was generally good with this. The additional toilet was a bonus. The extra long bed was also useful.
- The Good: They have Coffee/tea maker, which is a must for me. Also, Free bottled water, which is a thoughtful touch. The Mirror was a decent size. Complimentary tea and complimentary tea - a nice touch.
- The Okay: The Bathroom was clean and functional, but not exactly spa-like.
- The "Hmm…": They say they have a Desk, but it was somewhat cramped. And the Closet was fine, but if you’re staying for an extended period, you might find yourself living out of your suitcase (or becoming very good at origami clothing folding). I really wanted to give them a score of 10/10, but I felt I could only give it a 7/10.
Things to Do (and How to Avoid Doing Much of Anything)
Alright, let's talk leisure. The swimming pool? Gorgeous. That pool with view is a definite selling point. I spent a solid afternoon just staring at the skyline, feeling all zen and stuff. The fitness center seemed pretty well-equipped, though I, erm, didn't actually use it. The gym/fitness is a big plus, which is good for the active people.
The Spa is there, but I didn’t have a chance to try it. Same for the Sauna, Steamroom. They do have a Foot bath. I wish I knew more about it, but I wasn't able to explore it properly.
Dining, Drinking, and (Hopefully) Not Starving
Here's the thing: I'm a food person. And the dining options at Liberty Arc were…well, they existed. There's a Restaurants, and a Poolside bar which is a good start. They offer Breakfast [buffet], and other breakfast options. Including Asian breakfast.
- The Good: Room service [24-hour] is a lifesaver, especially after a long day of city exploration (or avoiding traffic jams).
- The Okay: The Coffee shop coffee was decent, but I’ve had better. The Bottle of water was nice. They do have Desserts in restaurant which is nice for the sweet tooth. They do offer Salad in restaurant, and Soup in restaurant.
- The "Hmm…": They offer A la carte in restaurant which is fine if you know what you're doing. They offer Vegetarian restaurant, but I felt that the variety was lacking. Happy hour is a bonus, but nothing to write home about.
Cleanliness and Safety: COVID-19 Considerations
Let's be real: the pandemic changed everything. Liberty Arc seems to be taking things seriously. Hand sanitizer everywhere. Daily disinfection in common areas. Staff trained in safety protocol. Physical distancing of at least 1 meter. Rooms sanitized between stays. I saw evidence of Professional-grade sanitizing services, which is reassuring. They even have, Individual-wrapped food options, Safe dining setup. I was able to see them making use of Anti-viral cleaning products. They also have Daily disinfection in common areas, Sterilizing equipment. All the necessities are there.
(But let's be honest, I still wiped down my own surfaces… that’s just me, though.)
Services and Conveniences: The Little Things Count!
Concierge, Daily housekeeping, Doorman, Elevator, Luggage storage, Laundry service, and Ironing service. All the usual suspects are here. The convenience of having a Convenience store on-site is a win. They also offer Air conditioning in public area. The Safety deposit boxes are a must.
Getting Around & The Car Park Debacle
Car park [free of charge] is stated. They also offer Car park [on-site]., Taxi service. I didn't have a car, but the fact that there was free parking was a bonus if you have one.
For The Kids
I didn't bring any kids, but it looks like they offer Babysitting service and other Kids facilities.
The Verdict (Finally!)
Liberty Arc Ampang? It's a solid choice. The WiFi is a godsend. The pool is lovely. The rooms are comfortable. The COVID-19 precautions give you peace of mind. But, it's not perfect. It's a little impersonal, a little generic. But, for what it's offering, it's a good option.
Final Score: 7.5/10. Would stay again… mostly for the WiFi. And the pool. And to avoid Ampang traffic as long as humanly possible.
Unbelievable Nagoya Hotel Deal: Route Inn Higashi Betsuin Awaits!
Alright, buckle up, buttercups, because we're diving headfirst into my gloriously imperfect Kuala Lumpur adventure, based out of that slightly-too-slick-for-its-own-good Liberty Arc Ampang Modern SOHO II (WiFi + Smart TV, blah blah blah). Prepare for a rollercoaster of emotions, questionable decisions, and enough nasi lemak to make you crave a detox faster than you can say "air jagung."
Day 1: Arrival and the Great Curry Catastrophe
14:00 - Touchdown KLIA & Uber Chaos: Okay, first impressions: KLIA is HUGE. Like, "can I just live in this airport for a week?" huge. My flight was delayed, naturally. Already running on fumes. Managed to wrestle myself into an Uber…which proceeded to get me utterly LOST. The driver, bless his heart, seemed to be playing "Count the Roundabouts" as a competitive sport. Finally, after what felt like traversing the entire Klang Valley, made it to Liberty Arc. The lobby? Swanky. My SOHO? Slightly smaller than advertised. The WiFi, however… chef's kiss.
16:00 - Settling In & Panic Snack: Unpacked. Dropped my bag (okay, maybe threw it). Smart TV is blinking at me, taunting my exhaustion. Found a mini-mart downstairs. Grabbed some… questionably-packaged instant noodles. Fueling up the only way I know how: with questionable chemicals and a dash of existential dread.
18:00 - Curry House Carnage (aka The Great Curry Catastrophe): Decided to brave the local food scene. Yelp recommended a place called "Mama's Kitchen" nearby. Sounded promising. Ordered what I thought was a mild chicken curry. Oh. My. God. It was… an experience. Not a pleasant one, exactly. My mouth felt like it was on fire. Tears streamed down my face. I swear I saw steam coming out of my ears. I barely spoke a word, simply gasping for water and praying for its fiery reign to pass. The server looked at me with an amusing mix of pity and amusement. I definitely left red-faced and humiliated. Conclusion: Malaysian curry is no joke. Lesson learned. (And I am now addicted to Teh Tarik to try and calm down.)
20:00 - Smart TV & Staring into the Void: Back in the "luxurious" SOHO. The Smart TV won't connect to my streaming service. Just a black screen. I stare at it, defeated. Considering ordering a pizza but don't have the energy to order a pizza…. instead I just sit and listen to the rain falling, and wonder what I've signed up for.
Day 2: Temples, Traffic, and the Tourist Tango
09:00 - Breakfast of Champions (or Desperation): The mini-mart noodles again. Hey, they're familiar! And at least the water is cold!
10:00 - Batu Caves Pilgrimage (and a Monkey Frenzy:): Time for some culture! Took a (thankfully less-lost) Grab to the Batu Caves. The ascent to the caves was… intense. Those steps! Made me feel like I was climbing Mount Everest. The giant gold statue of Lord Murugan is breathtaking. And then the monkeys. Oh, the monkeys! Little furry bandits, snatching food and posing for selfies. One of them tried to steal my water bottle! I shrieked. My dignity? Slightly compromised. Got a photo with a monkey but will still be in therapy about it.
12:00 - Lunch Like a Local - Food Court Fiasco Okay, the Curry Catastrophe has scarred me, I was determined to try again. Found a food court nearby the caves. Ordered something that looked vaguely safe. Turns out, it was deliciously tasty! Felt a little bit like a local even though I was obviously as touristy as possible.
14:00 - Petronas Towers and my fear of heights: Headed into KLCC. I've seen the pictures so I know what to expect. The Petronas twin towers are impressive when you are not looking up but look at the top? The views from the top! Oh, wow. Worth it. Even if, the whole time, I felt like I was going to fall.
16:00 - Shopping: I'm Broke Decided to wander around the Suria KLCC mall. I wanted to buy something, anything, to remind me of the trip. Everything seemed to be either Gucci or a knock-off. I left empty handed, instead deciding to treat myself to a cheap ice cream cone.
19:00 - Dinner, Maybe (or Just The SOHO Suffer): The thought of venturing out again after the shopping was too much. Instead, I made instant ramen in my room and watched whatever I could on the smart TV. The wifi, strangely, wasn't acting up so that was a bonus.
Day 3: Parks, Pampering, and Packing…or Maybe Just a Nap…
09:00 - Noodle Rehab: Decided to give up and have noodles for breakfast one last time. Decided on a walk in the park.
11:00 - KLCC Park: The Green Escape: KLCC Park is a gorgeous, green oasis in the city. Spent a couple of hours wandering around, enjoying the peace and quiet. Finally, this is what I needed, a chance to slow down.
14:00 - Spa Day? (Or Maybe Just Netflix): Considering a massage. Then I remember prices… and the rain… I have to leave for the airport tomorrow so I'll just have a massage when I get home…..
17:00 - Packing: The Reality Check: Gotta pack! What do you bring? Not to much. Too much. I can't decide. I have a bunch of clothes that I'll never wear. I have to buy more clothes when I get back. Okay… I'll just… I'll just watch more Netflix…
20:00 - Existential Ramen and Farewell to the Smart TV: Last night. Goodbye, Kuala Lumpur. Goodbye, SOHO… Goodbyes, WiFi. Back to the real world.
Final Thoughts:
- The Good: Malaysian food is truly incredible (when it doesn't try to kill you). The Batu Caves were awe-inspiring. The Petronas Towers are a must-see. And the people? Friendly, helpful, and always willing to offer a smile.
- The Bad: Traffic. Oh, the traffic! The Smart TV was a tease. And my taste buds are still recovering from the curry incident.
- The Absurd: The monkeys trying to steal everything. The sheer amount of chili in everything. My own attempts to navigate a city I barely knew.
- The Verdict: Kuala Lumpur? Worth the trip. Would I go back? Absolutely. Would I pack more Imodium? Absolutely! Would I go back and just lie down? Absolutely!
